Do a controlled test when nobody needs the connection. Note which devices must remain powered for a phone call to work. If you switch off a mesh node, does the phone still connect? If the router reboots, how long before voice service returns? If the cordless base is unplugged, do handsets go dead even though the router is fine? If the broadband box has a separate power supply, does the voice service fail when that box is off? Write down the recovery time, because “it comes back eventually” is less useful than “calls returned after six minutes”.
For households with vulnerable users, poor mobile coverage or provider-supplied backup equipment, follow the provider’s battery-backup guidance rather than improvising. Some providers offer specific help for vulnerable customers. Some equipment has limits on how long it runs and what it supports. A generic power bank may be useful for phones, but it is not automatically appropriate for routers, ONTs or alarm equipment. Voltage, connectors, power draw and runtime all matter, because electricity remains annoyingly specific.
Build a fallback contact plan
A resilient home should not have one single route for help. List the normal landline number, mobile numbers, Wi-Fi calling availability, neighbour or family contacts, alarm provider numbers, broadband provider support, care-alarm supplier and any medical or local authority contacts that matter. Store the list somewhere visible and boring: a printed sheet near the router, by the phone base, or inside a household folder. Apps are useful until the person who needs the number cannot unlock the phone or the phone is flat.
Check mobile signal in the rooms that matter. A broadband-based landline plus poor mobile coverage plus a power cut is the awkward triangle. If one room gets better mobile signal, write that down. Plan router swaps and provider visits carefully
