Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology for smart-home devices. A Thread smart plug does not join your normal Wi-Fi directly. It joins the Thread mesh, then reaches the wider network through a Thread border router. That border router might be built into a compatible smart speaker, smart display, hub, Apple TV, HomePod, SmartThings station or similar device, depending on your ecosystem and model. Without a border router, a Thread plug is not magically useful.

Think About Local Control and Failure Modes
A smart plug should fail safely. If the internet goes down, what happens to the automation? If the cloud service is unavailable, can you still control it on the local network?
